International Symposium - The value of land
The International Symposium The value of land will be held on the 29 and 30th September at the Institute of Social Sciences of Lisbon University. Conveners: Susana de Matos Viegas and João de Pina-Cabral.
Thematic Proposal : In this Symposium we aim to bring together a group of scholars to discuss the way in which land is valued and simultaneously disputed in the process of cohabiting. Cohabiting is here understood very generically as processes of constitution involving people and territory that are historical correlates of intersubjectivity.
Access to land and use of territory are central aspects in people's work-related activities in the contemporary world. Legal property of land is often blurred and people's use of territory where they both work and live is often inserted into a complex network of social relations and environmental factors that ensure the sustainability of use. We want to understand the integration between legal and informal types of access and ownership of land and resources, both with a comparative and a theoretical scope.
The theme of the Symposium was elicited by Brazilian debates and thus has a wider participation of anthropologists who have done research in Brazil, but is theoretical scope is far wider. Thus, the Symposium brings together scholars that have developed theoretical models of thinking about value and ownership and have developed wider comparative approaches, mainly balancing the issue in Brazil (from the peasant to the indigenous and urban situation), Amazonia and those considered in a more general way to Melanesia/Papua New Guinea, Indonesia or Guinea in Africa.
