Enlightments, Universalisms, Colonialisms
The event Enlightenments, Universalisms and Colonialisms will take place on June 24th, at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon. The event is organized by ICS-ULisboa researchers Isabel Corrêa da Silva and Angela Barreto Xavier.
Bringing together researchers working on the Portuguese empire, as well as on the French empire and other colonial contexts, the journées d’études “Enlightenments, Universalisms, and Colonialisms” will offer a space for critical reflection and dialogue between different historiographical traditions on Enlightenment thought within imperial political cultures. With a chronological focus spanning from the end of the Ancien Régime to the early twentieth century, the event aims to explore how the ideals of Enlightenment universalism were mobilized, adapted, or contested in distinct colonial settings, and how these imperial experiences either aligned with or challenged dominant narratives of modernity, reason, and civilization.
The event will take place In Room B112.C, in the Library Building. See the full program.
