We are delighted to invite you to the 2nd Doctoral Students’ Colloquium “Ethnographic Perspectives,” organized by the Research Group “Diversidades” based at ICS-ULisboa. The group is mainly composed of anthropologists and social scientists who work in fieldwork and archival research, engaging in comparative ethnographic analysis and anthropological theoretical thinking, with an emphasis on race, gender, migration, environmental and urban studies. This initiative, in continuity with the one Colloquium of 2025, aims to create a comfortable space in which early-stage researchers can present and share their ethnographic trajectories through a biannual event.

Through this colloquium we hope to gather plural perspectives on fieldwork, open a dialogue between PhD students in Portugal who are using ethnographic approaches in their research and learn more about each other's works. The Colloquium is open to doctoral students from various fields in the social sciences and humanities who incorporate ethnography into their research. It is also open to PhD researchers at different stages of their projects - from the initial proposals to questions that arise from ethnographic analysis and the final writing of the thesis.

Presentations can be in different formats, from conventional oral communications to audiovisual content, but we are also open to any other format that may arise. A senior researcher will participate as a discussant in each session, so that the conversations can be enriched with perspectives coming from different career stages.
The event will take place on October 8th and 9th, 2026, in the Maria de Sousa room at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon. No conference fee is required to participate. Lunch will be offered to all the speakers.

You should send your proposals for participation by June 22nd to wang.xin@edu.ulisboa.pt (Shams Wang). Each submission must include:
● Title;
● Short abstract of 250 words;
● 3-5 keywords;
● Format.

The Colloquium is open to students from any institution; you don’t need to be a student of ICS or ULisboa to participate!
Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any queries you might have.

We look forward to your participation,
Antonio Pedro de Barros, Chiara Beneduce, Shams Wang, and Matteo Vivi (DANT-ULisboa)
