An Introduction to the Anthropology of Religion

An Introduction to the Anthropology of Religion

This project originates from an invitation of the Portuguese publishing house Angelus Novus to write an introductory book on the anthropology of religion for a series called Biblioteca Mínima (translatable as ‘Essential Library'). This series covers a wide range of topics pertaining to the domains of the social sciences, humanities and arts. It comprises a number of disciplinary sections (such as Anthropology) and each of these in turn comprises a number of thematic volumes (such as Religion). All the books in the series have a standard format (128 pages, a short introduction, four or five chapters, a short conclusion, and a bibliography with no more than 25 entries). The challenge is to write a book that summarises classical as well as contemporary anthropological key approaches to religion, rendering them available to the non-specialised reader in a concise and clear manner.

Objectivos:
The objective of this project is to provide Portuguese-speaking readers with a contemporary introduction to the anthropology of religion. This book should be helpful to anthropology students, other social sciences students and readers with an interest on the topic of religion.
State of the art:
To our knowledge, no work of this kind is to be found either in Portugal or in other Portuguese-speaking countries. Most of the existing manuals and introductions to the anthropology of religion have been published in English language. These works will be taken into account as a source of inspiration.
