The present objective of the Project is the publication of a book on «Architecture as vocation and profession» based on our 2006 survey. Contents: 1) Theoretical discussion; 2) the architects' socio-demograpy; 3) training and access to the profession; 4) work modalities and problems facing architectural practice; 5) values, attitudes and «profiles». Main conclusions of the study: (a) the <em>ethos </em>of architecture lies in a recurrent tension between «vocation» and «profession» because of the artistic dimension of architecture, which associates it with the «creative class»; (b) Portuguese architects exercise a weak «professional jurisdiction» over the building industry; (c) the liberal professional remains the ideal-type architecture. Two articles are currently under refereeing - one in English (Comparative Sociology) and another in Portuguese (Análise Social).
