EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY 4
EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY 4
The European Social Survey is a biannual academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour patterns of its diverse populations within a comparative and longitudinal perspective.
The ESS in Portugal is a consortium between the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon and the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa [Superior Institute of Work and Management Sciences](ISCTE). Jorge Vala is the National Coordinator.
For more information see http://www.atitudessociais.org/
Centrally the ESS is funded by the European Science Foundation and the European Comission and in Portugal by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and by the Institute of Social Sciences itself.
The questionnaire is applied to random probability samples of the country's populations. The universe is composed by those living in each country, with 15 years or older, regardless of their nationality or legal situation. It is composed by a core module and two or three rotating modules. The core module aims to measure continuities and changes in the following domains:
Media exposure
Participation and socio-political attitudes
Interpersonal and institutional trust
Well-being, health and security
Social values
Sociodemographic characterisation
The rotating modules of previous editions were:
ESS 1 Immigration; Citizenship
ESS 2 Family and Work; Health and Caring Opinions; Economic Morality.
ESS 3 Personal and Social Well-Being; Organisation of the Life Course
Data produced within this project is free and can be accessed in the following websites - http://www.atitudessociais.org/; http://ess.nsd.uib.no/
