Social appropriation of the danger and the industrial technology's - comparative perspective Moçambique/Portugal

Comparative study about the safety practices, perceptions and concepts in two technologically complex industries: the primary aluminium smelter Mozal, in Beluluane, near Maputo (Mozambique), and the oil refinery Petrogal, in Sines, Portugal. The main methodological instrument of the project is the long-term direct observation, complemented by interviews, documents analyse, and short questionnaires, intended to quantify (a posteriori) phenomena detected during the direct observation. Having as starting point theoretical inputs from previous projects of the researcher, the immediate objectives of the study are to understand the processes of learning industrial technology and technological rationality, and how do labour hazards and other threats are perceived and conceptualised, according to different possible logics, such as probabilistic "risk", unpredictable "danger" and local systems of "domestication of uncertainty". Secondly, the project intends to understand the consequences of such notions and practices (and of their actual interaction) to the limitation or increase of the dangers which are inherent to the production developed in those plants.

Objectivos:
1) to understand the processes of learning industrial technology and technological rationality;
2) to analyse how those processes interact with previous knowledge and rationality systems;
3) to understand the logics which guide the perception and conceptualisation of labour hazards and other threats, and their interaction;
4) to understand the consequences of such notions and practices, to the limitation or increase of the dangers which are inherent to the production developed in those plants;
5) to analyse possible guidelines (arising from the results of the study) for the building-up of future innovative industrial projects of high technology.
