Djaimilia Pereira de Almeida is a novelist and essayist. Her stories seek to restore a neglected sensibility by reflecting on hospitality, justice and human existence defeated by history and contingency. Her work has been the recipient of several prizes and distinctions including the Oceanos Prize, the Grand Prize for Novels and Novellas from the Portuguese Writers’ Association and the D. Diniz Prize. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Folha de S.Paulo, Serrote, ZUM, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Colóquio-Letras, la Repubblica, Quatro Cinco Um and elsewhere. Her books, published in seventeen countries, are required reading for the entrance examinations at the University of São Paulo, the State University of Rio de Janeiro and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil. In 2023, she received the FLUL Alumni Prize, awarded by the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where she obtained her PhD in Literary Theory. In 2025, she received the Vergílio Ferreira Prize, awarded by the University of Évora, for her body of work.
