Conferência ICS 2016
CS Annual Conference is devoted to a single main topic that is central to the research activities of our Institute. The annual conference’ main goal is to create an interdisciplinary and creative environment to reflect on a theme integrating plural concepts and methodologies and creatively contribute to foster its future research agenda and theoretical debate. This year ICS gathered an excellent group of researchers/academics from different disciplinary backgrounds and representing diverse theoretical and methodological approaches to discuss a particularly timely topic – contemporary migrations - and its global and local impacts in contemporary societies.
Even if highly scrutinized in the last years, human migratory movements present today a significant degree of complexity in terms of temporality, space, scale and intensity that poses significant challenges to all social sciences. The increasing diversity of groups involved and the shifting and multiplying nature of the individual and collective causes, consequences and experiences implicated, contribute to the difficulty to frame and grasp migration and reinforce its representation as one of the most contested features of present-day life.
The conference aims to push forward the ongoing debates around:
a) Central complementary and/or competing concepts: migration, movement, circulation, transnationalism, route, border, network, belonging;
b) Confrontations between different movements: nature, scale, configuration, technology;
c) Intersections and impacts of movement: race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, religion.
