This project gathers a number of experts in different areas of social sciences (history, sociology, law, international relations, political science and political economy) so as to conduct an overall analysis of Portugal's participation in the EU, after 20 years of integration.
Objectivos:
The year of 2006 marks the twentieth anniversary of Portugal's accession to the European Union. This event significantly changed the country's historic, social, economic, political and legal reality. To commemorate this event, it was considered an interesting idea to conduct an overall analysis of Portugal's pathway. In general, the different contributions should constitute a global, interdisciplinary and multi-faceted perspective of how Portugal has lived its membership of the European Union. As the chronology of the project shows, the process involves the authors coming together twice in order to maintain the consistency and unity of the volume that is intended to be published. In the first meeting, carried out in December 2004, the content of the volume was defined formally and substantially. In 2005 a conference will be held where all the authors will be present their contributions. After a process of revision, these contributions will be published in a special number of Análise Social, as well by a commercial publisher.
State of the art:
O volume inspirador deste projecto é o livro editado em 1994 por José da Silva Lopes, intitulado Portugal and EC membership evaluated, publicado pela Pinter Publishers. Existem alguns volumes recentes que abordam a evolução da democracia portuguesa e que necessariamente discutem a União Europeia, em especial aqueles editados por António Costa Pinto, nomeadamente o Modern Portugal e o Contemporary Portugal. Para além desses, também recentemente Paul Manuel e Sebastian Royo editaram um volume em que se faz um balanço dos quinze anos da integração de Portugal e Espanha na UE. Ainda assim, consideramos que o nosso projecto se distingue destas valiosas contribuições. De facto, procuraremos simultaneamente uma perspectiva mais restrita e mais abrangente do que os volumes acima mencionadas. Mais restrita na medida em que visamos explicar a relação de Portugal com a UE e não a democracia portuguesa como acontece nos volumes editados por António Costa Pinto. Mais abrangente do que o volume de Royo e Manuel já que abordaremos a questão sob diversas lentes analíticas providenciadas pelas diferentes áreas das ciências sociais. <p> </p>
