Walking the talk: a computational approach to differences between votes and political discourse
This Thursday 2nd July will be the last SPARC for this academic year (2.30-4pm).
We are lucky to have an excellent speaker - Joana Gonçalves Sá - to close this year
Title: Walking the talk: a computational approach to differences between votes and political discourse
Authors:Lılia Perfeito , Paulo Almeida, Manuel Pita and Joana Goncalves-Sá.
The abstract:
Recently, much attention has been given to what is perceived as a strong increase in political polarisation (between parties) and decreased heterogeneity (within parties). As this has mostly been studied through quantitative analysis of voting patterns, particularly in two-party systems, current approaches do not tackle the full complexity of multi-party systems or subtleties in discourse. Using the Portuguese Parliament as a case study, we analysed over 40 years of parliamentary discourse and voting history. Through a generalizable computational pipeline, we found that discourse is not always a good predictor of voting and confirm that polarization has been increasing. Moreover, we show that two parties that are completely aligned in terms of voting can have substantially different discourse, suggesting that, despite similar voting patterns they could be appealing to very different constituencies. Overall, we present a model system for large-scale, longitudinal parliamentary analysis, which can be applied to other multi-party systems, in different languages and facilitate comparative studies.
