Previously in African Studies twins have been understood to be either a biological or a cultural problem. Multiple births were said to be too "animalistic" for human society or too difficult for the mother to care for. Other analyses stressed the social structural problem of two beings in one social position. While some African societies follow these dictates, a more complete survey reveals many societies which cherish twin births and even among those who are ambivalent about twins positive attitudes prevail. Indeed, among Africans in the Americas, the healing and helpful qualities of twins are their main features. A broader comparison of African and European attitudes towards twins reveals intriguing differences between these culture areas.
