An analysis of the effects of urban economic segregation on civic participation in the district of Cascais. Comparing the political practices and values of residents of closed condominiums, social housing estates and the general population with the aim of studying the relative importance of economic contexts for party political participation as well as the civic implications of political fragmentation in metropolitan areas, of which the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML) is the main example in Portugal.

Objectivos: 
This research project aims to achieve an understanding of territorial and residential contexts in the political and civic participation of residents of three different areas of the district of Cascais - 'closed condominiums', social housing estates and the general population. Economic segregation in metropolitan areas is an important area for analysing the involvement of citizens (or their lack of involvement) in political and civic issues. Our approach is, to a certain degree, related to the critical theory of urban studies that stresses the connection between spatial/architectural configurations of urban areas and the political behaviour and civic values of residents.
State of the art: 
A diminuição da participação cívica tem preocupado os cientistas sociais (cientistas e teóricos políticos, sociólogos urbanos e geógrafos políticos) que voltam as suas atenções para questões como a fragmentação dos espaços urbanos das metrópoles e para a erosão dos canais 'tradicionais' - de debate e envolvimento nas questões locais - de exercício da cidadania(Olivier, 1999).
