Abstract
This work is part of the study area on the family and disability, addressing the fraternal
relations when there is the presence of a (a) brother (sister) with disabilities. This
study, still in progress, is presented in the fieldwork phase, have been made five
narrative interviews with siblings of disabled male and female, aged between 18 and
29 years and various positions in the offspring. It started from the assumption that the
presence of a disabled person in the family is a source of stress, interfering in family
relationships, including the fraternal relations. The following categories were analyzed:
Parental behavior, position in the offspring, prejudice and its influence on
developmental transitions of siblings with typical development. It was concluded that
the factors that influence the fraternal relations are numerous and complex: a parental
relationship, age and sex of the brother, his position in the offspring, the number of
brothers having positive acquisitions resulting in fraternal relations as solidarity,
empathy with people with disabilities, greater autonomy. Finding out more about
disability helps the Brother to better understand the situation experienced.
Highlighted the need to seek strategies to implement assistance to these brothers in
these families, favoring specific needs of each and not generalizing, but to identifying
the needs of each.
Keywords:
Family, disability, family ties, fraternal ties, siblings.
