2 Welcome to ICS Marina Costa Lobo The Director The Instituto de Ciências Sociais is an Organic Unit of the Universidade de Lisboa, an R&D Unit of FCT and an Associated Laboratory evaluated as “Excellent” since obtaining status. Here, we carry out Innovative research on contemporary societies, addressing their legacies and facing their challenges. While we promote excellence in research, we also promote dialogue between science and society on topics related to Inclusion and Vulnerabilities, Citizenship, Sustainability, and Memories and Legacies, where our impact is tangible and lasting. We strongly invest in advanced scientific training, carrying out doctoral programmes and postgraduate specialisation and training courses. All teaching is closely linked to the theoretical and methodological approaches developed in ongoing research at ICS-ULisboa, as diverse as the societies we study. We are committed to creating a working and learning environment that is as inclusive as it is dynamic, where all voices are heard and valued. From cutting-edge research to advanced scientific training that shapes lifelong learning for young people and adults, we are committed to contributing positively to society. After all, knowledge only makes a difference when it is rigorous, shared, discussed, and applied.
