--- Resumo da palestra (EN) ----

"Mozambique has been considered a best-practice case for reconciliation by Transitional Justice (TJ) scholars and practitioners alike. “Forgetting the past” has been identified as the key to success: On the political level an amnesty has been implemented, on the local level political and religious leaders have promoted the message of “let the past rest”, instructing the population to forget the memories of the war. However, despite the “instructed” forgetting, contested memories prevail. In Nampula, especially during election time and with regard to the still on-going peace process, narratives of the civil war re-emerge putting into question the narrative of successful reconciliation in Mozambique. Based on 14 months of field research between 2019 and 2021 in Mozambique, I am analysing why these narratives emerge and critically reflect on what this could mean for the role of ‘forgetting’ in Mozambique’s reconciliation process in specific and for the concept of reconciliation in TJ-studies in general."
