We strongly invest in advanced scientific training, carrying out doctoral programmes and postgraduate specialisation and training courses. All teaching is closely linked to the theoretical and methodological approaches developed in ongoing research at ICS-ULisboa, as diverse as the societies we study. We are committed to creating a working and learning environment that is as inclusive as it is dynamic, where all voices are heard and valued. From cutting-edge research to advanced scientific training that shapes lifelong learning for young people and adults, we are committed to contributing positively to society. After all, knowledge only makes a difference when it is rigorous, shared, discussed, and applied. While we look back with pride and gratitude on ICSULisboa's 60-year history, we also have our eyes firmly set on the future. Join us on this exciting journey as we continue to shape the future of social sciences and contribute to a more informed, reflective, and connected society.
3 Objectives With an innovative curricular organisation, this doctoral programme includes four areas of specialisation defined according to thematic criteria, going beyond the traditional organisation of PhDs in History linked to chronological periods. In Portugal, PIUDHist is the first doctoral programme in History based on an inter-university partnership, bringing together five Portuguese university institutions. The main objectives of the programme are: To offer a transversal and comparative training, articulated around medium and long-term approaches To enable the confrontation between different methodological perspectives in the understanding of historical objects To open the interpretation of historical objects to the contributions provided by different social sciences and, in this way, promote dialogue and interdisciplinary intersection To provide conceptual and methodological tools suitable for historical research projects with a high level of demand in the treatment of sources and data To promote the integration of students in the national and international historiographical community, encouraging participation in seminars and specialty conferences • • • • •

7 “PIUDHist offers a unique experience in Portugal. I've developed critical thinking about my work in a stimulating environment of ongoing discussion about various themes and chronological periods, creating a rich dialogue with the main historiographical debates of the present. PIUDHist also gave me the opportunity to belong to an international community of students, professors and researchers. Because it is an interuniversity program, it allowed us a plural and heterodox approach on the practices of History without being confined to the traditions of one institution. I remember the doctorate as a period of restlessness and difficult management of expectations, with a never-ending search for originality. After finishing my tuition, I served as Science Director of an economic group and I'm now an invited Professor at Universidade de Coimbra, where I teach Economic and Business History." Francisco Henriques “In PIUDHist, I have studied with colleagues from very different areas, and varied origins, ages and personal backgrounds. The themes, time periods and objectives were also different. It looked like a group without any similarities. However, we all, because of these differences, had the possibility to peek through the window that each project opened to us. This broadening of perspectives, particularly on the 1st year, was extremely valuable. On the 2nd year, we were helped by the Monitoring Seminars. The path of research is solitary. But it was never a path of solitude. Supervisors and Professors joined this diverse but closely-knit group, shinning a light over the path that, in the end, we've travelled together. After finishing PIUDHist, I had the opportunity to publish a book with a version of my research, which was awarded a prize by the Portuguese Academy in History. Overall, I would say that having been through PIUDHist allowed me to have 'more world', with everything this expansion means. And, not least, make friends for life." Joana Pontes Testimonials
