2 Welcome to ICS Marina Costa Lobo The Director The Instituto de Ciências Sociais is an Organic Unit of the Universidade de Lisboa, an R&D Unit of FCT and an Associated Laboratory evaluated as “Excellent” since obtaining status. Here, we carry out Innovative research on contemporary societies, addressing their legacies and facing their challenges. While we promote excellence in research, we also promote dialogue between science and society on topics related to Inclusion and Vulnerabilities, Citizenship, Sustainability, and Memories and Legacies, where our impact is tangible and lasting. We strongly invest in advanced scientific training, carrying out doctoral programmes and postgraduate specialisation and training courses. All teaching is closely linked to the theoretical and methodological approaches developed in ongoing research at ICS-ULisboa, as diverse as the societies we study. We are committed to creating a working and learning environment that is as inclusive as it is dynamic, where all voices are heard and valued. From cutting-edge research to advanced scientific training that shapes lifelong learning for young people and adults, we are committed to contributing positively to society. After all, knowledge only makes a difference when it is rigorous, shared, discussed, and applied. While we look back with pride and gratitude on ICSULisboa's 60-year history, we also have our eyes firmly set on the future. Join us on this exciting journey as we continue to shape the future of social sciences and contribute to a more informed, reflective, and connected society.

3 Study Topics Our PhD Programme in Development Studies seeks to introduce the knowledge, capabilities and dispositions necessary for engaging with both the challenges and possibilities arising from our age of disruption. Research topics for the doctoral thesis and course units are grounded on a broad range of issues related to the sustainable development of contemporary societies. The first year courses explore: key concepts of development, its main critiques and changing meanings; sustainable development and transitions; issues of poverty and inequality; development economics and aid finance; development cooperation, policy and political issues; geography and urbanization; sustainable consumption, agriculture and contemporary agrarian transformation; food production and ecosystem services; mobility and migration; gender studies; security-development nexus. As a Development Studies Programme, interdisciplinary links are established between Economics, Sociology, Geography, Anthropology, Social and Economic History, Political Science and Law, and Environmental and Agrarian Studies - thus providing an integrated perspective of development and sustainability issues in contemporary societies. Special attention is paid to research methods and techniques, which are required for development studies. Successful candidates will have different disciplinary, cultural and experiential backgrounds, and this is considered a crucial part of the learning experience. We encourage dialogue and team work to maximise the benefits of diverse backgrounds and worldviews.

5 “I’m a second year PhD candidate in development studies and I highly recommend this PhD programme. Held by four schools at the Universidade de Lisboa, this programme enables me to have a fundamental understanding of the theory, and acquire an interdisciplinary way of thinking. As an international PhD programme, our colleagues are from various countries, which also provides us with an opportunity to build friendships, and learn how to communicate and work in an intercultural environment, which is essential for a researcher in this field.” Xin Su “I was fortunate that I pursued my PhD in Development Studies at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management, Universidade de Lisboa. I received my PhD in February 2022 under the guidance of Prof. Olivia Bina from the Universidade de Lisboa and Prof. Peter Victor from York University. I received tremendous support, advice, and encouragement from my supervisors. This PhD programme has many unique features that stand out. The syllabuses of the PhD programme improved the skill sets that prepared me for my future career. Many proficient and knowledgeable professors were willing to guide me during different stages of my PhD studies. The courses of this PhD programme have a unique structure that gave me the flexibility to tailor essays based on my dissertation, which helped me write my thesis. I enjoyed having the flexibility to pick various topics for my research projects. I had the opportunity to become a Visiting Scholar at York University in Canada; this was an excellent opportunity to grow in different aspects of education, career, and personal experiences. The training, support, inspiration, and opportunities I received through my doctoral programme at the Universidade de Lisboa have allowed me to fulfill my professional dreams.” Mojgan Chapariha “The PhD in Development Studies is a multidisciplinary and heterodox programme that has enabled me to acquire distinctive aptitudes to understand socio-economic development phenomena. This programme is unique in that it offers a comprehensive approach that simply cannot be found in most advanced economics courses. The teaching staff mirrors this multidisciplinary model and the fact that the PhD is developed by four different schools at the Universidade de Lisboa is one of the strengths of the course. Overall, my experience has been very positive, with the PhD not only contributing to my growth as a professional, but also to my development as a citizen.” Diogo Maia “I studied for the PhD in Development Studies after an experience of over seven years managing international development projects and programmes. With a background in Political Science and International Relations and an MSc in Development Studies, I felt the need to go back to academia and build new bridges between theory and practice. In development cooperation, especially in the current global transition context, strong research skills and the capacity to analyse complex systems are key for any pro-fessional. This PhD is a joint programme between ICS and other three Schools of the Universidade de Lisboa (ISA, IGOT and ISEG), providing the multidisciplinary perspective we need to approach global deve-lopment challenges. A diverse body of faculty and researchers is available to provide input to our ongoing research, which I found espe-cially useful. I will surely rely on this experience to continue growing as an international development researcher-practitioner.” Ana Luísa Silva
