DOCTORAL P R O G R AMM E Sociology: Knowledge for Open and Inclusive Societies OpenSoc
2 Welcome to ICS Marina Costa Lobo The Director The Instituto de Ciências Sociais is an Organic Unit of the Universidade de Lisboa, an R&D Unit of FCT and an Associated Laboratory evaluated as “Excellent” since obtaining status. Here, we carry out Innovative research on contemporary societies, addressing their legacies and facing their challenges. While we promote excellence in research, we also promote dialogue between science and society on topics related to Inclusion and Vulnerabilities, Citizenship, Sustainability, and Memories and Legacies, where our impact is tangible and lasting. We strongly invest in advanced scientific training, carrying out doctoral programmes and postgraduate specialisation and training courses. All teaching is closely linked to the theoretical and methodological approaches developed in ongoing research at ICS-ULisboa, as diverse as the societies we study. We are committed to creating a working and learning environment that is as inclusive as it is dynamic, where all voices are heard and valued. From cutting-edge research to advanced scientific training that shapes lifelong learning for young people and adults, we are committed to contributing positively to society. After all, knowledge only makes a difference when it is rigorous, shared, discussed, and applied. While we look back with pride and gratitude on ICSULisboa's 60-year history, we also have our eyes firmly set on the future. Join us on this exciting journey as we continue to shape the future of social sciences and contribute to a more informed, reflective, and connected society.
3 Objectives In OpenSoc, we aim at providing our students with the best experience in learning and scientific creation: Advanced theoretical, methodological, and practical training in the “sociologist’s craft” and its social applications. Besides the seminars making up the study plan, we encourage students’ involvement in research teams’ activities. Students can also take advantage of Summer schools and specialised courses provided by the different universities in order to deepen and diversify their learning, as well as to gain transversal skills for knowledge communication and valorisation. Quality of academic life, by providing an environment of constant reflexive stimulus, peer discussion and criticism, as well as good material and intellectual work facilities for doctoral studies, both in place and online. Encouragement and opportunities for internationalisation, by supporting individual or collaborative international publication, participation in international scientific events and networks, and mobility within and without the circle of OpenSoc partner institutions, including the possibility of obtaining the tile of Doctor Europaeus. Acknowledgment of a doctoral training for excellence, by the joint granting of the doctoral degree in Sociology by the four universities associated in OpenSoc, whichever one the student chooses to conclude his or her thesis.
