Women and associativism in Portugal, 1914-1974
This research project aims to study some women's associations that played a significant role in Portugal from the beginning of the First World War until the 25th of April 1974. Ten women's groups will be studied taking into account their different longevity:
- Assistência das Portuguesas às Vítimas da Guerra (1916-1918)
- Comissão Feminina do Movimento de Unidade Democrática (1945-1947)
- Comissão Feminina Eleitoral da Candidatura de Arlindo Vicente (1948)
- Comissão Feminina Eleitoral da Candidatura de Humberto Delgado (1958)
- Comissão Feminina Eleitoral da Candidatura de Norton de Matos (1948-1949)
- Comissão Feminina « Pela Pátria » (1914-1917)
- Comissão Protectora dos Prisioneiros de Guerra Portugueses (1918-1919)
- Conselho Nacional das Mulheres Portuguesas (1914-1947)
- Cruzada das Mulheres Portuguesas (1916-1935)
- Movimento Democrático de Mulheres (1968- )
- Movimento Nacional Democrático Feminino do Movimento Nacional Democrático (1949-1957)
- Movimento Nacional Feminino (1961-1974)
- Núcleo Feminino de Assistência Infantil da Junta Patriótica do Norte (1916-1938)
- Núcleos Femininos do Movimento de Unidade Nacional Antifascista (1943-1948)
The length of the period under study: 1914-1974, more than a half century, will permit to analyse the changes that occurred in the structures and dynamics of these associations which were coming from different political backgrounds: monarchical (APVG), support of the dictatorship (MNF), Republican (CFP, CMP, CNMP) and clandestine, legal, or semi-legal opposition to the authoritarian Estado Novo regime (CFEHD, CFENM, CFMUD, MDM, and NFMUNAF). Thus, this project will contribute to write a political history from a gender perspective. Furthermore, a combined historical and sociological approaches of networks analysis, will provide new insights on women's associations, focusing on the links and transfers between the ten associations under study.
