This project aims to study the post-colonial implications of the social relations instituted by the Portuguese expansion, in particular by the process of diasporization that took place during the twentieth century (both colonial and migrational).  The project fosters a greater understanding of the processes that bring into existence a transnational and discontinuous space of privileged relationships - an ecumene - based on that historic legacy, including not only the regions where Portuguese is the official language but also those where there is a strong diasporic Portuguese presence - the Lusotopy

Objectivos: 
The project aims to prolong comparatively the ethnographic work carried out by the author in Macao (1990-1999) and in Mozambique (1997-2001).  The contrast with contemporary Brazilian debates about ‘race', ‘tribe' and ‘nation' gives rise to a comparative effort of greater regional reach.
State of the art: 
Este projecto responde a uma crítica tão feroz quanto possível ao culturalismo neofoucauldiano aplicado à questão imperial que tem surgido na última década sob os lemas de "orientalismo", "póscolonialismo" e "transculturalismo". A constituição de uma perspectiva sobre o fenómeno imperial que não se limite ao momento colonial e que aborde as questões reflexivas da identidade de uma forma menos anglocêntrica é essencial neste momento.
