Parliament during the crisis of Portuguese liberalism (1890-1926)
Parliament during the crisis of Portuguese liberalism (1890-1926)
The aim of this project is to analyse the history of the Portuguese parliament from 1890 to 1926. It will focus on an assessment of the activities of deputies, peers and senators during several legislatures, to be selected on the basis of a combination of criteria relating to the political relevance of the debates and the legislation produced. The work will begin with an examination of parliament during the final years of the constitutional monarchy, comparing development in periods in which the regeneration party or the progressive party held majorities, comparing policy continuities and cleavages during the last years of the alternation of power between these two parties. Using a similar methodology, the project will then look at the activities of Congress at key moments before and after World War I. A third section will formulate detailed comparative conclusions aimed at shedding new light on the use of legislative power and on political practices during the monarchist and republican regimes.
