The Country Going Down the Sea - Risk Practices and the Scientific, Administrative, Media and folk visions about the Erosion of Portuguese Coast

Departing from documents analyse, interviews and direct observation of local practices, this 38 months-long project will study: 1) the characteristics of the scientific, political/administrative, media and folk interpretations about the current erosion of Portuguese coast, its causes, importance and risks, and the interactions between those interpretations; 2) the interpretations of those social agents about the prospective, precautionary and palliative measures that should be taken; 3) the risk practices and evaluations, about this subject, of the different social agents (political/administrative, economical, populations) involved in the use and management of coastal territory.

It is expected that the knowledge produced during the project might be useful to the management of coastal erosion, at the local and at the national level.

The research team will include more investigators, from social sciences and other disciplines of knowledge, according to the evolution of the study and the fund raising.
