Evaluating and improving the access to mental health services of people affected by the economic crisis in Portugal based on a new understanding of the effects of the crisis on mental health of the population

The project was proposed under the ‘Programme area: Public Health Initiatives – Mental Health’/EEA Grants, and is directly focused on the study of mental health problems related to inequalities and other effects of the socio-economical crisis.

It has two objectives:

1. To obtain a new understanding of the effects of the economic crisis in Portugal on mental-ill health of the populations, the determinants of mental disorders, and use of mental health services;

2. To propose new policies, plans and interventions aimed at the reduction of health inequalities and mental health problems linked with the crisis.

 

The main tasks are as follows:

  1. Search and discussion of information and analytical models on effects of crisis on mental health of the populations
    • Literature review
  2. Completion of the follow-up epidemiological study (2009)
    • Establishing epidemiological indicators, designing the new module of the Interview, and defining the final format of the instrument;
    • Preparation of the survey;
    • Data collection and analysis.
  3. Completion of other assessment strategies
    • Analysis of suicide rates and use of mental health services;
    • 3 in-depth local case-studies.
  4. Proposing new mental health policies, plans and interventions for people with mental health problems associated with the crisis
    • Literature review;
    • Designing innovative mental health policies, plans and services.
