Views of Colonialism and the Historiography of Portuguese Overseas Expansion in Contemporary Portugal (19th-20th century)

This research project aims to provide an explanation for the negative view of the 15th and 16th centuries' Portuguese overseas expansion to be found in the work of such influential writers as Alexandre Herculano, Oliveira Martins and António Sérgio in the 19th and 20th centuries. We propose to look at the way in which classical republican concepts and language present in the work of those writers affected their evaluation of the historical consequences of the Portuguese conquests and discoveries in the early modern period, as well as their view of contemporary projects for colonisation in Africa. This research hopes to contribute to a re-examination of the intellectual context of colonialism in 19th and 20th century Portugal.

Objectivos:
We are assembling and editing some articles we published on this topic in academic journals with a view to their publication in book form. Further, we are working on a conference paper on the languages of 20th century Portuguese colonialism we have given at the University of Oxford, so as to have a manuscript to be proposed to an Anglophone academic journal.
