Lord Beresford was a dominant figure in Portugal between 1807 and 1820 - as a governor of Madeira, as one of the commissioners appointed to oversee the operation of the Convention of Sintra, as the general charged with forming a new Portuguese army, as battlefield commander between 1810 and 1814 and finally as Marshal General of all Portuguese and Brazilian armies from 1815 to 1820. During this time he provided a political counterweight to the power of the Council of Governors and played a crucial part in the events associated with the Gomes Freire conspiracy. This is the first book to look at Beresford's career during these years and to assess why João VI attached so much importance to his influence in Portuguese military and political affairs.
